Jos Verstappen Clears the Air on the Gas Station Story

The story of Jos Verstappen allegedly abandoning his son, Max Verstappen, at a filling station has long been a staple of Formula 1 folklore. It painted a picture of an intensely demanding father who would go to extreme lengths to shape his son into the world champion we know today. However, in a recent interview with F1 Insider, Jos has finally set the record straight, claiming the story has been misunderstood.

According to Jos, the infamous incident did not involve him leaving Max stranded at a petrol station. Instead, after a disappointing karting race where tempers flared, Jos opted for a different form of discipline. “I think it’s time to clear up that story,” Jos said. “The truth is: I didn’t leave him there. I just didn’t speak to him for a week.”

This revelation sheds new light on the dynamic between Jos and Max during the early years of Max’s career. Jos’s intense approach to mentoring was often seen as harsh, but it was instrumental in preparing Max for the pressures of Formula 1.

Max himself has acknowledged the value of his father’s tough love. Jos revealed, “He felt that my attitude had prepared him better for Formula 1. That’s why dealing with Helmut Marko, who is also known as an extremely tough guy, didn’t bother him anymore.”

The filling station story, whether true or exaggerated, became emblematic of Jos Verstappen’s demanding yet impactful role in Max’s development. While Jos’s methods might not work for everyone, Max has consistently credited his father’s guidance for helping him achieve his meteoric rise in motorsport.

Jos’s clarification doesn’t diminish the intensity of their relationship—it adds nuance. It shows that Max’s journey to becoming a world champion wasn’t just about talent but also resilience, discipline, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

As the Verstappen duo continues to dominate headlines, one thing is clear: their story is far more complex—and inspiring—than a single moment at a gas station.
